Who We Are

The Warriors of Hope were first introduced to North Bay in October 1999, launched by a small group of breast cancer survivors and supportive volunteers. Since then, this inspirational team has become a role model for breast cancer survivors everywhere. In addition to training and racing, our team has a mandate to raise awareness of breast cancer through public education, community involvement, and fundraising for breast cancer research.

Our original founders began the team through fundraising and corporate donations, which garnered our founding corporate support, which enabled us to purchase the equipment we needed to get started, and in the year 2000 we were on the water. We named our practice boat “Jane” to honour those who have gone before us, and those who will surely follow.

The Warriors of Hope practice racing on pristine Trout Lake every Tuesday and Thursday, from May through early October. In the summer months, we travel to provincial and international festivals, where we race against other Survivors as well as community teams. In the winter, we get together to follow a weekly Dry Land Strength Training program that was professionally designed specifically for our unique needs

Some of our community activities include participating in the annual Relay for Life and CIBC Run for the Cure, raising awareness through the Silver Linings Wellness group, and supporting the North Bay Regional Health Centre Breast Screening Program.  We hold fundraising events and take advantage of every opportunity to promote breast cancer awareness

Over the years, our team has grown in numbers, both survivor/paddlers and supportive associate volunteers. In 2014 we placed 13th out of 100 breast cancer survivor dragon boat racing teams worldwide. Our success has been achieved through the support of family, friends, community groups and private businesses.

Why We Need Your Support

One in eight Canadian women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. And while breast cancer in men is rare — less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men – it does happen. According to the latest statistics, it is estimated that 26,300 women and 230 men in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer and almost 5000 women and 43 men will die from the disease in the next year.1

Breast cancer survivor dragon boating is an international movement initiated in 1996 by Canadian sports medicine specialist Dr. Don McKenzie of the University of British Columbia, whose research resulted in the conclusion that the risk of death from breast cancer can be reduced by 67% simply by doing two to three hours of exercise each week.

The Warriors of Hope are not just a dragon boat racing team…we have a mandate to raise awareness about the quality of life that is possible after treatment by living our message and creating a haven for those who are battling the disease. But, since our team is entirely volunteer-based, we require corporate sponsorship to achieve our goals.

You can help!

Your support for the Warriors of Hope allows us to train on land and on the water, attend dragon boat races and festivals, and maintain our equipment – all while raising awareness of breast cancer.  Your sponsorship sends a message to those living with this disease, demonstrating that it is possible to have an exciting and challenging life after treatment. As a sponsor, you will give breast cancer survivors a renewed sense of self-esteem and focus beyond survival.

We have sponsorship, donation and in-kind support opportunities at a number of different levels. Please study our enclosed Sponsorship Levels and Benefits document, and choose a sponsorship option that works for you.
